Apps Snag Three Top Finishes at Mountain vs. Beach

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Jamal Tiller was one of three athletes to grab a first-place finish for Appalachian State University men's track and field at Saturday's Mountain vs. Beach Invitational at Harold Greene Track.

The Mountaineers were paired with Western Carolina in a battle against East Carolina and UNC Wilmington, who represented the Beaches in the annual event.

Despite a 345.5-310.5 victory for the Beach schools, Appalachian had several standout performers including Tiller, whose leap of 49'4.5" in the triple jump placed him two inches ahead of the next competitor.

Darius Purcell brought home the high jump title yet again with a leap of 7'0.25" while Daryl Saunders finished second with a mark of 6'9".

Landon Powell rounded out the Apps' top finishers with a victory in the 200-meter dash (21.66 seconds) and Dennis Moore finished second with a time of 21.94.

In the distance events, Charles Wofford grabbed third in the 3,000-meter run (8:57.82) while James Howard-Smith was third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (9:49.65).

Jacob Stow was third in the pole vault (15'3") while Jared Stalling (55'9.25") and Nick Sansotta (47'1") finished second and third, respectively, in the shot put.

Appalachian's 4x100-meter relay team of Moore, Powell, AJ Dohanic and Justin Thomas finished first with a time of 40.82 seconds.

The Mountaineers return to action next Saturday at the Auburn Invitational before hosting the Appalachian Open Meet in April 13.
