CHARLESTON, S.C. - After winning four-straight matches,
Appalachian State University women's tennis saw its streak snapped with a 0-7
loss to College of Charleston in Southern Conference action on Sunday at CofC
Tennis Center. The Mountaineers (7-4, 1-1 SoCon) suffer their first league
loss, while the Cougars (7-4, 3-0 SoCon) have won three in a row.
In doubles action, CofC took the No. 3 match handily, 3-8.
At No. 2 doubles, Appalachian seniors Gabriela Celi and Gisela Fernandez
competed hard but were unable to hang on, falling 6-8.
Fighting off the pairs sweep, ASU juniors Jennifer Ansari
and Ellie Linsell were tied 7-7 against their Cougar foes and pulled off a 7-2
win in the tiebreaker, taking an 8-7(7-2) win at No. 1 doubles.
In singles action, College of Charleston remained in solid
control across all six matches. In the No. 1 spot, Linsell hung close in the
second set but fell 6-1, 6-4, while sophomore Jessica Thaggard fell in her No.
4 match by an identical score.
In the end, College of Charleston swept all six singles
matches without losing a set, shutting out the Mountaineers.
Appalachian State's road trip continues as the Mountaineers
move on to face Jacksonville on Wednesday at 10 a.m.
