MORGANTON, N.C. - Appalachian State University men's and women's golf worked together to take down Western Carolina, 6-1, at the University Cup on Wednesday at Mimosa Hills Country Club.
In the biggest win in the short history of the event, the Mountaineers were led by the pair of
Dustin Hudson and
Lauren Smith, who defeated their counterparts, 4-and-3, behind rounds of 71 (Hudson) and 77 (Smith).
Darren Cook and
Rumbidzai Masamvu picked up a 3-and-2 win as Cook carded a 73 and Masamvu shot a 78 in Morganton, N.C.
Casey Komline and
Samantha Bonham cruised to a 6-and-4 win as Komline fired a 72 and Bonham added an 84 on the afternoon.
In the closest pairing of the day, newcomer
John Michael Cole matched up with senior
Samantha Patton to win a one-up match. Cole carded a 78 while Patton shot a 96.
Freshmen
Jason Woodall and
Elena Thomas teamed up in the fifth slot and picked up a 2-and-1 win behind Woodall's 83 and Thomas' 88. They were followed by a pair of seniors in
Lance Wheeler and
Brittany Zachrich. Wheeler fired a 75 and Zachrich added an 81 as the duo won, 2-and-1.
ASU's lone setback in the competition against the conference rival came in the seventh slot, where junior
Nick Buckwell (77) and recent graduate
Ginny Thompson (No Card) were out-dueled, 6-and-5 by the Catamounts.
Appalachian's women return to the course on March 4 at the Dayton Hilton Head Invitational, held at Bluffton, S.C.'s Belfair Club.
The men host the second annual Bash at the Beach event at the Myrtle Beach, S.C. Surf and Golf Club on March 11-13.
