BOONE, N.C. - Appalachian State University men's soccer head
coach Matt Nelson has announced three recruits that have committed to join the
Mountaineers next season. Alex Herbst, Matt Melton and Mason McCarter will don
Black and Gold jerseys this fall, adding to the strength of the Appalachian
program.
Coach Nelson explains that the existing talent on the team
warranted a smaller-than-usual newcomer class this year. "We are only adding
three players at this time, because we feel that the foundation of our team is
returning, and the continuity will show in our play on the field. These three
new players will bring work ethic, technical ability and a tactical awareness
that will help our program improve."
Nelson adds, "Each one of these players will be expected to
contribute in their first year and I have the utmost faith that each have the
qualities to do just that. Their high character makes them an instant fit into
our team chemistry, and we are excited to have all three join us."
Alex Herbst - Apex HS - Apex, N.C.
Herbst was a four-year letterwinner at Apex and a two-time
all-conference selection in addition to honors as an all-state and all-region
player. He played the 2011-12 season as a member of the Capital Area Soccer
League's (CASL) Chelsea FC Academy
Nelson on Herbst: "Alex comes from CASL and has versatility
to play in multiple positions. His attacking ability combined with his
willingness and ability to defend will give us plenty of options to improve our
midfield this season."
Matt Melton - North Gwinnett HS - Suwanee, Ga.
As part of Atlanta Fire United, Melton was a six-year
starter and three-time Georgia State Cup semifinalist, including one appearance
in the title match. He also played as a member of FC Atlanta.
Nelson on Melton: "Matt Melton will add non-stop
energy, effort and technical ability to our midfield. He will be able to
compete for playing time in his first season. "
Mason McCarter - Shelby HS - Shelby N.C.
McCarter committed to Appalachian after playing as a member
of the two-time North Carolina 2A Championship-winning Shelby High School team.
He has honed his skills as a member of the North Carolina Youth Soccer
Association club programs and numerous N.C. Olympic Development programs.
Nelson on McCarter: "Mason McCarter will bring
versatility to our program. His ability to play multiple positions will
undoubtedly help the team this coming season."
