ROCK HILL, S.C. - With a final
round score of 144, senior Yue Xu propelled Appalachian State University women's
golf to the Winthrop University Intercollegiate championship Sunday afternoon
at Rock Hill Country Club.
With
the victory, the Mountaineers claim their first invitational championship since
the Low Country Intercollegiate in March.
The
Apps claimed the top three scores of the tournament as Xu earned medalist
honors with matching 72s (E) for a tournament score of 144. Senior Rumbidzai Masamvu followed, shooting 72-75=147(+3), giving her second place for the
tournament. Senior Lauren Smith finished third, carding a 74-74=148 (+4).
Senior Mimi Burke tallied a 74-79=153, earning her the 12th position
for the tournament, as sophomore Elena Thomas finished in a tie for 31st,
shooting 80-82=162(+13) for the tournament.
The Mountaineers finished the tournament with a 592, defeating second place Gardner-Webb, who fired a 610.
Appalachian
returns to the links on Monday, Oct. 15 when it travels to Charleston, S.C. and
Rivertowne Country Club for the Wendy's Classic. The Classic is set for a
two-day tournament.
