BOONE, N.C. - Appalachian State University men's soccer will
hit the road again for its tenth match away from Boone this season, traveling
to Greenville, S.C. to meet Furman for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
The Mountaineers
Appalachian enters
the weekend with a 4-6-2 overall record and seeking its first Southern
Conference victory of the season, settling for a 0-0 deadlock against Georgia
Southern on Tuesday. The Mountaineers recorded their sixth shutout of the
season against the Eagles, not allowing a GSU shot on goal for 110 minutes.
The Appalachian
backline continues to shine, as senior Lee Williams and junior Walker White
have played in every minute this year. The Apps are 26th in the
nation in shutout percentage and 99th in the nation in team goals
against average.
In goal, sophomore
Paul West got his second shutout of the season and third of his career in the
0-0 draw against Georgia Southern. Junior Danny Free has earned four shutouts
and stopped 30 shots en route to three victories on the year.
The Paladins
Once nationally
ranked Furman comes off a heart-stopping 3-2 overtime victory over ACC opponent
Clemson on Tuesday night, improving FU's record to 9-2-2 overall. The Paladins
are 1-1 in league play this season, falling at Elon in overtime is their last match
on Saturday. Furman's lone conference victory came against in-state rival
College of Charleston as the Paladins defeated CofC, 1-0.
Junior Martin
Ontiveros leads FU in points with 19 on the season, notching seven goals and
five assists. The Paladins currently have three players in the top-10 in
scoring as senior Coleton Henning, sophomore Walker Zimmerman and redshirt
freshman Tyler Peoples combine for 14 goals on the year.
Senior goalkeeper
Doug Ryan has played in just under 1200 minutes this season, earning all of
Furman's nine wins this season. The senior has nine shutouts and 30 saves on
the year.
QUICK HITS
- Saturday's match
marks the 54th meeting between App State and Furman with the
Paladins controlling the all-time series with a 29-22-2 record. FU and the
Mountaineers played to a scoreless draw in their lone meeting in 2011.
- In the last two
seasons, the Appalachian defense has earned 16 shutouts (10 - 2011, 6 - 2012).
- The Apps play three
of their final five matches in Boone, as the Mountaineers hit the road one
final time to Wofford on Tuesday, Oct. 23.
- Appalachian returns
to the High Country on Wednesday, Oct. 16 when non-conference opponent Belmont
visits the Mountaineers for the first time in program history. Kickoff is set
for 6 p.m.
