POSTGAME NOTES

Team

  • The margin of defeat was Appalachian's largest ever in a season opener (prev. 46 points at Wyoming, 2004 - 53-7), the largest in any game since a 56-0 loss at NC State on Oct. 6, 1990 and the fifth-largest overall in the program's 82-season history.
  • ASU surrendered 60 points for only the second time in school history (882 games). The only other time that ASU allowed 60-plus points was in a 72-14 loss at Chattanooga on Oct. 7, 1978.
  • ASU allowed 50 or more points for only the 15th time in school history and the first time since a 59-56 loss at Chattanooga on Oct. 30, 2004.
  • ASU trailed 38-0 at halftime and has now been outscored by a combined 124-7 in the first half of its last four games versus FBS opponents (28-0 at Florida last season, 27-7 at East Carolina in 2009 and 31-0 at LSU in 2008).
  • ASU has allowed a touchdown on its first defensive series against its last five FBS opponents.
  • ASU fell to 7-39-1 versus FBS opponents since the inception of Division I football subdivisions in 1978.
  • ASU fell to 3-7 in its last 10 season openers. All 10 have come on the road and all seven losses have come at the hands of NCAA Division I FBS (Football Bowl Subdivision - formerly Division I-A) competition.
  • ASU fell to 0-4 all-time versus Virginia Tech.
  • Virginia Tech's blocked punt in the third quarter was the first against ASU since South Carolina State's in the first round of the 2008 NCAA Division I Football Championship (Nov. 29, 2008).

Individual

  • WR Brian Quick had three receptions for 110 yards, good for the seventh 100-yard receiving game of his career.
  • P Sam Martin matched a career-high (minimum five punts) by averaging 45.0 yards over eight punts. His also averaged 45.0 yards at Florida in 2010. Two of his punts on Saturday went 50-plus yards and two were downed inside the 10 yard line.
  • Five Mountaineers made their first-career starts: LT Kendall Lamm (redshirt freshman), LG Kalan Jones (redshirt freshman), C Alex Acey (true freshman), WR Andrew Peacock (sophomore) and RDE Ronald Blair (true freshman).
  • RT Orry Frye and RG Matt Ruff each made their 28th-consecutive starts. QB DeAndre Presley (14) and SS Troy Sanders (14) are the only other Mountaineers with double-digit streak of consecutive starts.
  • LS Wilson Fitchett and LG Kalan Jones left the game with ankle injuries. Their statuses for next Saturday's home opener versus North Carolina A&T are unknown at this time.
