CONWAY, S.C. -
Appalachian State men's soccer is set for a trip to the Coastal Carolina/adidas
Tournament and a pair of matches to wrap up a string of five-straight road
games. On Friday, the Mountaineers (2-2-1) face host Coastal Carolina (4-1-0)
at 7:30 p.m., and on Sunday, ASU takes on Hartwick (1-1-2) out of the
Mid-American Conference (MAC) at noon.
SERIES HISTORY
- Coastal Carolina leads the all-time series with
Appalachian, 1-0-1. In the squads' first meeting in 1986, the Chanticleers
picked up a 1-0 win over ASU in Boone. The teams' more-recent game was played
in Conway on October 17, 1987. Four Apps scored goals en route to a 6-6 draw.
The game is the highest-scoring tie in Appalachian history.
- This weekend's game is the first-ever between Hartwick and
ASU.
- The Mountaineers are 1-1-1 against current members of the
MAC. The Black and Gold lost to Akron (1-4) in 1979, defeated Florida Atlantic
(4-3) in 1995, and tied Bowling Green (0-0) last season.
APPS' LAST TIME OUT
- At last weekend's Davidson adidas Classic, the
Mountaineers finished 1-0-1 to capture first place at the tournament. Four
Mountaineers were named to the all-Tournament team: Mark Bridges, Sean Dreybus,
Ryan Duffy and Lee Williams.
- On Friday, ASU and Gardner-Webb finished in a 0-0 draw,
despite the Apps' 21-13 advantage in shots. On Sunday, the Mountaineers
defeated Detroit, 2-0, on the back of Costin Gregory's first career goal and a
second by Dreybus.
SCOUTING THE CHANTICLEERS
- Coastal Carolina enters the weekend riding a four-game
winning streak. The Chants' only loss came to UNC Charlotte in their
season-opener.
- In its last match, Coastal Carolina edged No. 16 VCU in
double overtime. Robby Joe Daniels netted the game-winner in the 104th minute
for his third goal of the year.
- Junior Ashton Bennett has scored a team-high four goals on
the year and added two-assists. Justin Portillo, Ricky Garbanzo and Daniels
