FLORENCE, S.C. - Appalachian State University men's golf carded a consistent 297-293-297=887 (+23) to place 13th at the season-opening Spring Hill Suites Intercollegiate.
The Mountaineers were led by Josh Nichols, who placed 18th with a 70-71-75=216 (E). The junior knocked in 13 birdies over 54 holes and ranked second in the event with a cumulative two-under on the course's par-threes.
Daniel Walsh and newcomer Jason Woodall tied for 53rd at 224 (+8). Walsh posted a 73-74-77 while the freshman from Yanceyville, N.C. finished with a 78-75-71.
Casey Komline posted a 76-73-78=227 (+11) in 68th place and Dustin Hudson carded 78-78-74=230 (+14) to place 71st.
Furman took home the team title with an 856 (-8), two strokes ahead of second-place finishers Samford and USC Aiken. FU's Matthew Broome earned the tournament medal by one stroke at 208 (-8).
Also competing from the Southern Conference, College of Charleston placed sixth with an 866 (+2), Elon tied host Francis Marion for eighth place at 871 (+7), Georgia Southern finished 10th at 878 (+14) and Western Carolina wrapped up the event six strokes behind the Mountaineers in 14th place.
The Apps return to competition on Oct. 3-4 at the Telich Sun Life Financial Cleveland State Invitational in Beechwood, Ohio.
