Men's Soccer Defeats Detroit, 2-0

DAVIDSON, N.C. - ASU's Costin Gregory scored the game-winner on his first career goal as Appalachian State men's soccer picked up a 2-0 victory over Detroit at the Davidson College adidas Classic on Sunday. With the win, the Mountaineers level out to 2-2-1 on the year, while the Titans slip to 3-2-0.

Before the game, a moment of silence was conducted to honor the memory of those whose lives were impacted by the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

In the first half, the Titans maintained offensive advantage, and opened up a 6-1 advantage in shots with four corner kicks. On a Detroit throw-in, a clever header by Pat Lepera nearly found the net, but a speedy reaction by ASU keeper Danny Free denied the Titans' opportunity.

Midway through the first half, the Mountaineers notched their first corner kick, and senior Lee Rutter had a good look but sailed his shot narrowly over the crossbar.

ASU carried its momentum to six total shots in the first half, but the period expired without a score by either team.

Twenty minutes into the second stanza, Nate Latigue, Sean Dreybus and Rutter broke loose in a three-on-two situation, but despite the situation, Rutter's shot missed just left of the frame.

In the 73rd minute, the Apps broke loose deep in the Titans' end. On a serve by Dreybus, Nicholas Skoda connected on a hard shot from six yards. Detroit keeper Anthony Shepherd made the initial save, but Gregory was in position for the one-touch shot on the rebound to net the game's first goal.

Detroit amplified its pressure in the final minutes but not without a cost. In the final seconds, Sekani Sinclair and Dreybus broke loose with the ball behind the entire Titan defense. With just Shepherd in their way, the duo had no trouble circumnavigating the keeper, and Dreybus had the final touch to ice the game with less than 15 seconds remaining.

Free finished the day with three saves for Appalachian, while Detroit's Shepherd notched five.

"We had a great performance to finish a tough weekend," remarked coach Matt Nelson. "We rebounded and played well after the tragedy of last week. Most importantly, our guys played with 150% effort. I can't thank the players enough; to get my first win [as a head coach] with this group of guys means more to me than anyone will ever know."

Having finished the weekend 1-0-1, Appalachian secured first place in the Davidson adidas Classic. Four Mountaineers were named to the all-Tournament team: Mark Bridges, Sean Dreybus, Ryan Duffy and Lee Williams.

The Mountaineers next travel to Conway, S.C. for the Coastal Carolina Invitational. Appalachian takes on the host Chanticleers on Friday, Sept. 16 at 7:30 p.m. and Hartwick on Sunday, Sept. 18 at noon.
