Appalachian Flies by Georgia Southern, 5-2

BOONE, N.C. - Appalachian State University tallied its fifth Southern Conference victory of the season with a 5-2 thumping of Georgia Southern on Saturday afternoon. ASU improves its record to 13-5 and 5-2 in SoCon play while GSU drops to 9-10 and 2-5 in league action.

The Mountaineers began the day with a bang by sweeping the doubles.

Philip Kloc and Alain Humblet made quick work of Juan Melian Puigventos and Matthijs Verdam at the number one slot winning 8-3. Sebastien King and Alex Markov followed suit as they won 8-4 at No. 2 while Andrew McKinnon and Ezekiel Sansing completed the sweep with an 8-5 triumph.

In singles play, Appalachian continued to play well as it claimed four of the six matches, with all wins coming in straight sets.

Matt Saltsgaver snagged the first singles win for ASU with a 6-1, 6-1 beating of Sebastien Felt at the six spot. The freshman moves to 13-5 on the season while posting an impressive 5-2 SoCon record.

Markov was the next to finish, but he was unsuccessful at No. 1 against Melian Puigventos, who is 18-1 on the season and 7-0 in conference play.

McKinnon grabbed a two-set win over Edio Castanhel at number five. The sophomore breezed through his competition 6-2, 6-4.

The next three matches got deep into their second set before rain began to pour on the ASU Tennis Courts, so those matches were finished on Grandfather Mountain's indoor courts.

Kloc snagged a first set 7-6 (7-5) before the rain came but was losing 5-4 when the match was moved indoors. The change of playing surface must have ignited the Australian because he came back to win the second set 7-5 over Alain Garrido at the number two position.

King nearly claimed his victory before the rain came, but he had to move indoors to finish his match out by defeating Mark Paetz 6-3, 6-3 at the No. 4 slot.

Humblet was the last to finish, as his match got pushed to three sets. The Canadian grabbed an early lead by winning the first set 6-4 but fell apart in the last two sets to lose 6-4, 6-4.

The Black and Gold return to action Sunday to face Samford on the ASU Tennis Courts at noon.
