CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Appalachian
State University women's tennis season came to an end Thursday morning when it
ran into top seeded College of Charleston in the quarterfinals of the Southern
Conference Tournament. The Apps were outshined 4-0 by the Cougars.
The Mountaineers' day started off rough as it lost the
doubles point by losing at the two and three pairings.
First to fall were Amanda Cash and Jessica Thaggard as they
were shutout by Christin Newman and Jamie Harrell at the No. 3 duo 8-0.
Jennifer Ansari and Gisela Fernandez were the final victims in doubles action
as they fell 8-2 to Kinsey Casey and Katie lee, which solidified the doubles
point for CofC (19-7).
Ellie Linsell and Blakeley Bean's match went unfinished
because the doubles point was already captured.
Appalachian's bad day continued into single play as it
dropped the first set in all six matches. CofC's attack was relentless as it
captured the first three match decisions to conclude the match.
Cash dropped the first singles match in a 6-0, 6-0 decision
to Lee at the number five singles.
Ansari, who had the emphatic win yesterday to advance the
Black and Gold, was the next to fall. The sophomore couldn't muster up enough
to pull out a win over Emma Hayman who won 6-2, 6-3 at the No. 2 spot.
Appalachian's season came to an end when Bean lost to Casey
at the number four slot, 6-2, 6-3.
ASU finishes out the season with an 11-11 record. The 11
wins is head coach Colin Crothers' third most victories in a season during his
13-year tenure at Appalachian, and it's the most since the 2006 season when his
squad won 13 matches.
The Mountaineers graduate three seniors from this season's
squad: Amanda Cash, Laura Janke and Heather Prior.
