Mountaineers Drop Tight One Against CofC

CHARLESTON, S.C. - After winning its last five matches, Appalachian State University men's tennis dropped a tight match against College of Charleston on Saturday afternoon. The Black and Gold lost 4-3 to the Southern Conference foe and move to 7-4 on the season and 1-1 in SoCon play.

The Mountaineers got off to a hot start by sweeping doubles action to gain a 1-0 lead as it entered singles.

Juniors Alain Humblet and Philip Kloc claimed their eighth straight doubles victory with an 8-4 beating of Lukas Koncilia and Kyle Parker at the No. 1 pairing. Alex Markov and Sebastien King had a tough battle at the number two duo, but they pulled out a 9-8 win over Tom Delme and Stephen Hardy. Andrew McKinnon and Ezekiel Sansing finished off the sweep with an 8-6 triumph over Mickael Boyer and Mickael Trintignac.

In singles play, four-of-six matches were decided by three set verdicts.

Markov was the lone Appalachian to win in two sets, as he walked through Koncilia 6-0, 6-2 at the No. 1 spot.

The other two set match came from McKinnon and Boyer at the five position. McKinnon put up a good fight in the first set, but he would end up falling 7-5, 6-0.

Kloc and King both pushed their matches to three sets by winning the second, but both couldn't muster up enough to pull out a victory for ASU. Kloc dropped his match 6-4, 2-6, 6-0 to Delme while King lost 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 to Parker.

Freshman Matt Saltsgaver came up with a much needed win for the Black and Gold, as he came back from losing the first set 4-6 to Bryan Roberts to win the last two 6-3, 6-1.

Humblet's match was the last to finish and had the overall team win riding on his shoulders. The Canadian lost the first set 6-1 to Trintignac but came out firing in the second to win 6-3. In the last set, the pair push and pulled trying to gain an advantage, and it was the Cougar who did so, as he won the last set and the match for CofC 6-3.

The loss snaps the Mountaineers' five-match win streak and gives them its first SoCon loss of the young season.

After playing five matches in six days, Appalachian takes a well deserved rest for the next two weeks before it returns to action March 25 in its home opener against UNC Greensboro.
