CHARLOTTE, N.C. - After
winning its last three matches, Appalachian State University women's tennis let
UNC Charlotte slip away with a 5-2 victory to halt its winning streak on Saturday
afternoon.
The Mountaineers (5-3) got off to a poor start as it lost
2-of-3 doubles matches. The lone victory came in the second pairing of Blakeley
Bean and Gisela Fernandez as the thumped Emmanuelle Briant and Iveta Guneva
8-1. At the top pairing for ASU, Ellie Linsell and Jennifer Ansari fell by the
same score, and Jennifer Ansari and Kim-Lea Dinh made a valiant effort to help claim
the doubles point but dropped the match 8-6.
In singles play, Appalachian came out strong winning at the
No. 1 and 2 spots, but it would go one to drop the last four matches to the
49ers (7-4).
Linsell won her fourth straight match by beating Alexandra Zinn at the top spot,
7-5, 6-1, while Ansari battled back after losing the first set to trump Andrea
Rivera 2-6, 6-4, 6-0.
The Black and Gold would go on to lose two matches in three
sets, as Thaggard and Amanda Cash were outlasted at the No. 3 and 5 positions.
Bean and Dinh were defeated at number four and six in two straight sets.
The Apps next match is March 11 versus Gardner-Webb, and it
will be the squad's home opener for the 2011 campaign.
