Softball Loses Season Opener to Oregon State

TEMPE, Ariz.- Appalachian State University softball (0-1) was shutout in its season opener by Oregon State (1-0), 8-0, in the first game of the Kajikawa Classic hosted by Arizona State University on Thursday afternoon at Farrington Stadium.

ASU gave up five runs in the bottom of the first inning and was never able to recover.

OSU's Lea Cavestany struck out in the top of the first, but McKenna Lowe doubled in the next at bat. Erin Guzy singled and drove in Lowe. The Mountaineers received their next out of the inning after junior Caitlin Wainright recorded her second strikeout of the game after Mary-Claire Brenner watched strike number three go by. The Beavers went back through their lineup and Cavestany grounded out to senior Hannah Dow at first base to end the inning.

Sophomore Frannie Seader came in relief Wainright after she recorded two of the three outs in the first inning and settled in nicely to only allow five hits and three runs the rest of the way in the five-inning affair.

OSU's Marina Demore picked up the win for the Beavers while Wainright recorded the loss for the Apps.

The Mountaineers are back in action again Friday morning at 11:30 a.m. (ET) against North Texas and again at 2 p.m. (ET) against #9 Oklahoma.
