Appalachian State University football looks to secure an NCAA Division I Football Championship berth and a second-place Southern Conference finish in Saturday's regular-season finale at Elon. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. at Elon's Rhodes Stadium. The game will be televised live on the Southern Conference Sports Network, which consists primarily of Public Broadcasting System (PBS) stations across the Southeast (click HERE for a complete channel guide). NOTING SATURDAY'S MATCHUP
• Appalachian (7-3, 5-2 SoCon) has dominated Elon (5-5, 3-4 SoCon) for the better part of a half-century, with 15-straight wins in the series dating back to 1965.
• When Elon last beat Appalachian in 1964, ASU was known as Appalachian State Teachers College, the Elon University Phoenix was the Elon College Fighting Christians and both were members of the Carolinas Conference.
• In eight games since Elon joined the Southern Conerence in 2003, the Mountaineers have outscored the Phoenix, 313-143 (avg. score of 39-18).
• While ASU is no longer in contention for an unprecedented seventh-consecutive SoCon championship, a win on Saturday would nail down at least a tie for second place in the final conference standings.
• A victory would also all but assure the Mountaineers of a seventh-straight berth in the NCAA Division I Football Championship and likely give the Apps a first-round bye and second-round home game.
• Should Appalachian fall at Elon, it could still get in to the 20-team FCS postseason field but a first-round bye would almost certainly be out of the question, meaning that ASU would have to win five-straight playoff games to claim its fourth national title in seven years.
• ASU has won four of its last five games with its only loss during that stretch coming at Furman (20-10) on Nov. 5. Elon has lost three of its last four games with its only win during that stretch coming at Furman (41-34) last Saturday.
• The Mountaineers are averaging 468.6 yards and allowing just 308.6 yards per game over their last five games after gaining just 347 yards and allowing 369.4 per contest over the first five games of the campaign.
• ASU's rushing defense has been especially stellar this season with the seven teams on its schedule that don't feature a run-happy triple-option offense averaging just 105.9 yards per game on the ground. ASU has held three of those seven teams to less than 50 rushing yards, including a paltry 20 yards on the ground for Western Carolina last Saturday.
• Saturday's matchup features a battle between two of the nation's top wide receivers in ASU senior Brian Quick (53 rec., 905 yds., 17.1 avg., 9 TD) and Elon junior Aaron Mellette (99 rec., 1,403 yds., 14.2 avg., 11 TD).
