BOONE, N.C. - Having won its Southern Conference opener last weekend, Appalachian State men's soccer (5-2-2, 1-0 SoCon) returns home for a non-conference game against Winthrop (3-6, 0-1 Big South) on Wednesday. Action kicks off at 7 p.m. at ASU Soccer Stadium at Ted Mackorell Soccer Complex.
SERIES HISTORY
- Appalachian leads the all-time series with Winthrop, 9-4-2, dating back to 1993. In Boone, the Mountaineers hold a 3-2-1 advantage. Winthrop won the last edition, 3-2, in 2009, while ASU's most-recent win came in 2008 on a 2-1 road victory.
- The only overtime victory in the series was in 1998, when the Apps came away with a 2-1 win in Rock Hill.
APPS' LAST TIME OUT
- On Saturday, Appalachian opened its SoCon slate with a 2-1 victory over Elon. After the Phoenix jumped out to a 1-0 lead, senior Sean Dreybus leveled the score in the 32nd minute with his team-high fourth goal. In his debut with the Mountaineers, junior Boubacar Toure assisted Dreybus' goal and went on to score the game-winner in the 54th minute.
- The win capped a 1-0-1 week for the Black and Gold. After peaking at No. 7 in the NSCAA South rankings, the Apps have received votes in the third straight regional poll.
- Appalachian enters Wednesday with an unbeaten streak of six games (4-0-2). The squad has clinched a streak of 31 days without a loss, its longest in-season unbeaten streak since the team's 1978 SoCon Championship season.
SCOUTING THE EAGLES
- Winthrop opened the season on a three-game winning streak, including a 5-4 overtime victory over Georgia Southern and 3-2 win over Wofford. Since then, the Eagles have lost six straight with three defeats coming at the hands of SoCon teams (College of Charleston, Furman and Davidson).
- On Saturday, Withrop opened its Big South schedule on the road at High Point. The Panthers opened up a 3-0 lead by halftime and scored another trio of goals to hand the Eagles a 6-0 loss.
- On the year, junior Alex Mantchev and freshman Akeem Matthews have each scored a team-high three goals, while junior Alex Isern and classmate Matt Sluga have both notched a pair of assists.
