DAVIDSON, N.C. - After a three-goal effort by the Wildcats, Appalachian State men's soccer (8-4-4, 3-2-2 SoCon) was defeated by Davidson (8-7-2, 3-2-1 SoCon) in the Apps' Southern Conference finale on Saturday.

With the loss, the Mountaineers drop to fourth in the SoCon standings and await the result of the Wildcat's game against College of Charleston on Tuesday. A win or tie by DC would knock the Black and Gold to fifth and relegate them to a road quarterfinal game to begin the SoCon Tournament. If CofC is victorious, the Mountaineers would host Davidson in the opening round on Saturday, Nov. 5.

UNCG's win on Saturday clinched the outright 2011 regular-season crown for the Spartans.

Davidson scored Saturday's first goal with under two minutes to play in the first half. Dennis Shannon headed in his first career goal in the 44th-minute off passes by John Pace and Peter Paras.

The Wildcats extended the lead in the 60th-minute as Thomas Zimmerman gathered a rebound of a Jake Keator shot, and Zimmerman shot from 10 yards to double the lead to 2-0.

DC iced the game in the 75th minute when Chris Pettiglio and Nick Grube broke away and Pettiglio sank the final shot to clinch the 3-0 win for Davidson.

ASU's Sean Dreybus recorded both of the Mountaineers' shots on goal; Danny Free had two saves in net.

The Mountaineers close out the regular season on Tuesday, Nov. 1 when they travel to Johnson City, Tenn. to face ETSU at 7 p.m.
