MORGANTON, N.C. - Appalachian State University men's golf used its home course advantage on Monday to card a 292-286=578 (+2) to rank third heading into Tuesday's final round at the Donald Ross Intercollegiate at Mimosa Hills.
Leading the Mountaineer 'Gold' team, Dustin Hudson carded a 76-68=144 (E) and Casey Komline matched him with a 71-73=144 as the pair stands tied for 12th.
Sophomore John Michael Cole finished the day one stroke behind in 18th place at 72-73=145 (+1) and fellow newcomer Jason Woodall ended the day tied for 26th at 75-72=147 (+3).
Darren Cook stands 42nd at 74-79=153 (+9).
Competing officially as individuals, the Mountaineer 'Black' team had just as strong of a day. Junior Josh Nichols is tied for fourth at the tournament with a 72-67=139 (-5).
Redshirt senior Lance Wheeler made his season debut with a 71-72=143 (-1), just five strokes ahead of Eric Eberspeaker, who ranks 29th at 75-73=148 (+4).
Daniel Walsh is 32nd at 72-78=150 (+6) and Drew Harris is one stroke behind at 72-79=151 (+7) in a tie for 34th.
Together, head coach Bill Dicus' 'Black' team tallied a 577 (+1) on the day and would rank third if eligible for team awards.
Lynn holds the overall team lead at 568 (-8), nine strokes ahead of Western Carolina.
Presbyterian ranks fourth, one stroke behind the Mountaineers. PC is led by first-place competitor Matt Sizemore, who turned in a pair of 66-stroke rounds on Monday for a 132 (-12).
Gardner-Webb is also nipping at ASU's heels, just two strokes back. Also representing the SoCon, Elon stands 10th at 600 (+24).
Tuesday's final round begins at 8 a.m. from the Donald Ross-designed par-72 course.
