Men's Golf To Host Donald Ross Intercollegiate

MORGANTON, N.C. - Appalachian State University men's golf hosts the first 12-team Donald Ross Intercollegiate at Morganton's Mimosa Hills Golf and Country Club, October 16-18.

The teams will hold practice rounds on Sunday before playing 36 holes on Monday and the final 18-hole round on Tuesday at the 6,540-yard par 72 course, which was designed by Donald Ross.

In addition to "Black" and "Gold" teams representing the Mountaineers, Gardner-Webb, George Washington, High Point, Lynn, Maryland-Eastern Shore, Presbyterian, Radford, Stetson, as well as Southern Conference foes Elon and Western Carolina will compete at the event.

ASU head coach Bill Dicus said, "This is a great venue for our event. The course plays quick and is in great condition, which makes tournament play more fun for the participants."

In a throwback to Ross' era, Dicus limited the competition to 12 teams to allow for twosome pairings, rather than the more traditional foursome pairings at collegiate tournaments.

"We are expecting great weather in Morganton," Dicus added. "Hopefully the unique setup with twosomes will add excitement to the event and help us build on it in the future. I can't thank Mimosa Hills pro Dan Dobson and his assistant, (former ASU golfer) Jimmy Piercy.

Competing on ASU's Gold team are: John Michael Cole, Darren Cook, Dustin Hudson, Casey Komline and Jason Woodall.

ASU's Black team consists of:Eric Eberspeaker, Drew Harris, Josh Nichols, Daniel Walsh and Lance Wheeler.

Monday's opening round begins at 8 a.m. on the first and 10th holes.
