Two Late Goals Lift Men's Soccer to Victory

STATESBORO, Ga. - Trailing with 10 minutes to play, ASU rallied with a pair of late goals as Appalachian State men's soccer (8-2-2, 3-0 SoCon) defeated Southern Conference rival Georgia Southern (7-6-1, 3-2 SoCon) in a 2-1 win at Eagle Field on Friday evening.

Having defeated the Eagles, the Mountaineers move into first place in the conference standings with nine points and the tiebreaker over GSU. The Apps' extend the program's unbeaten streak to nine games (7-0-2), its longest since 1978.

The Eagles struck first, as Joe Hughes netted a goal on a pass from Luigi Clendening in the 32nd minute. Despite four Mountaineer corner kicks in the opening period, GSU maintained the 1-0 lead heading into the break.

Appalachian was aggressive in the second half and built a 6-3 lead in shots during the period but failed to find the back of the net.

In the 82nd minute, ASU's Nicholas Skoda scored the equalizer goal, finding the net on a header off a long throw by Harrison Delbridge. The goal was the freshman's first career goal and seemed destined to send the game into overtime.

Appalachian's Delbridge had other plans, as the sophomore netted his game-winner with 1:41 remaining in the game. Junior Ryan Lavigne served up a corner kick that Delbridge was able to redirect into the net for his second goal of the season.

In the closing seconds, Georgia Southern managed a final shot, but Appalachian keeper Danny Free came up with his fourth save of the game to preserve the victory.

Coincidentally, Appalachian's come-from-behind victory occurred just five days after GSU's women scored two in the last five minutes to rally back against the Apps.

ASU newcomer Boubacar Toure led all offensive players with a game-high four shots.

Appalachian returns to Boone for its next game on Tuesday, Oct. 18 as the Mountaineers host College of Charleston. Kickoff is at 6 p.m. at ASU Soccer Stadium at Ted Mackorell Soccer Complex.
