ASU Coaches' Summer Survey Series
ASU Coaches' Summer Survey Series

With Appalachian's athletics teams out of competition during the summer months, GoASU.com has asked ASU's head coaches their thoughts about a wide range of off-field topics and activities. Their answers will be shared with Mountaineer fans throughout the summer as part of GoASU.com's first Summer Survey Series. The second installment of the series is below.

What book(s) are you reading this summer?

Wrestling Head Coach JohnMark Bentley
I'm not currently reading any books but like to read Golf Digest in my free time.
Women's Golf Head Coach Heather Brown

Championship Team Building - a great resource tool for coaching

Wooden On Success - Great information from a legend

Think Strong for the Athlete - a good resource on positive mental preparation

Sacred Journey -my recreational read but a golf book with a great message

15th Club in the Bag - Gave this to the team for their summer read

Women's Tennis Head Coach Colin Crothers
A huge book about the Beatles. I'm taking the family to see Paul McCartney in Charlotte in July.
Men's Golf Head Coach Bill Dicus
Is This a Great Game or What? by Tim Kurkjian
Softball Head Coach Amy Herrington
The Gold Standard by Coach Mike Krzyzewski and Leadership and the One Minute Manager. They are books that help keep your mind on your program during the summer down-time that can be distracting when you are not with your team.
Men's Tennis Head Coach Bob Lake
When I get to take time off, I like (Robert) Ludlum and (Tom) Clancy
Football Head Coach Jerry Moore

The Pep Talk: A Football Book About the Business of Winning by Kevin Elko and Robert Shook - given to me by Lindsay Cobb's mother

Man to Man by Richard Halverson - a book that I read all the time

Gameplan For Life by Joe Gibbs

Profiles in Audacity by Alan Axelrod - given to me by (director of student-athlete development and team chaplain) Reggie Hunt. It's neat because it gives insight on how the greatest leaders in the history of the world made the decisions and led the lives that they did.

When the Game is Over, It All Goes Back in the Box by John Ortberg - Given to me by some former teammates, it is a neat book because it is reality.

The Winners Manual: For The Game of Life by Jim Tressel

This summer, I am reading books that are motivational. I like reading books like these to find ways to help myself, our staff and our players to not let anyone down — themselves and our school and our community, in particular.

Men's Soccer Head Coach Shaun Pendleton
I am watching the World Cup this summer, so I have put the books aside!
Baseball Head Coach Chris Pollard
Moneyball. I like the fact that it is very applicable to what we do on the field in baseball.
Women's Soccer Head Coach Sarah Strickland
Beyond Basketball: Coach K's Keywords for Success by Mike Krzyzewski
Women's Basketball Head Coach Darcie Vincent
I am reading Tony Dungy's Uncommon: Finding your Path to Significance and the Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren. I really like Tony Dungy's book because it discusses the philosophy of coaching and relates it to real life. He really emphasizes the importance of character as a person and how building character has made him a successful coach and helped him to develop successful programs. The Purpose Driven Life is an inspirational, religious book that discusses life balance and is helping me to gain some growth as a person and a coach.
Director of Cross Country and Track and Field John Weaver
The Bible

The weather!
Football Head Coach Jerry Moore
I like to fly fish and golf and it doesn't get much better than here to do those things in the summer. I also enjoy the people here in Boone — always have — and the summer gives me the opportunity to spend some time around those people.
Men's Soccer Head Coach Shaun Pendleton
The weather. It is nice to be out of the Florida humidity. You don't have to take so many showers each day and the thunderstorms don't arrive at 3 p.m. everyday as well.
Baseball Head Coach Chris Pollard
It is a tie. The weather and the traffic (compared to the school year).
Women's Soccer Head Coach Sarah Strickland
Waterfalls! They are amazing and I am trying to see all of them this summer!
Women's Basketball Head Coach Darcie Vincent
I love the outdoors and Boone is great for that especially during the summer time. I have been able to do some mountain and road biking and do some rock climbing and repelling. I love everything this area has to offer and am really able to take advange of it during the summer.
