GREENSBORO, N.C.- Appalachian State University men's tennis battled UNCG until the end, but could not hang on, as the Apps fell 4-3 in a hotly contested match. With the loss, the Black and Gold now drop to 8-8 on the season and 1-5 in league action, with the Spartans improving to 14-3 overall and a spotless 7-0 in the SoCon. UNCG has also now won 14 straight matches on its home courts and is 11-0 on the season at home.
Once again dominant in doubles play, Appalachian was victorious in two of three doubles matches and able to earn the early 1-0 match lead.
At the number one doubles spot, the team of
Trent Constance and
Peter Jacobs fell just short to Arsel Kumdereli and Orcun Seyrek, losing 8-6.
However, the duo of
Alain Humblet and
Philip Kloc were successful at the two slot, earning a tough 9-8 win and
Andrew McKinnon and
Britton Webb followed suit at the three spot, grabbing a 9-7 win, giving the Apps the doubles point.
Seyrek was too much for Jacobs at the one singles spot, as he won is 15th straight match, handing Jacobs a two set, 6-2, 6-2 defeat.
Humblet could not come away with a win either, losing to Kumdereli 6-3, 7-6 at the two spot, but Constance came through for the Apps downing Jacob Wright at the three position, winning 6-1, 6-1.
Kloc notched a win as well, beating Yaroslav Litus in three sets, winning 4-6, 6-4, 6-1.
The battle continued between the two teams as William John defeated
Ezekiel Sansing 6-3, 6-2.
In the match deciding contest, suffering from illness, McKinnon had to retire after winning the first set 6-4, he lost the next one 0-6 and was down 2-3 when he had to leave the match, giving the Spartans the 4-3 win.
Appalachian returns to the High Country, Friday April 9 to host Citadel at 2 p.m.
