Softball Takes on Charlotte and Virginia Tech in Mid-Week Games

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Appalachian State University softball takes on two tough non-conference opponents in mid-week games, traveling to Charlotte on Tuesday for a 4 p.m. doubleheader and hosting Virginia Tech at 5 p.m. on Wednesday.

Appalachian comes into the week at 16-14 after dropping 2-of-3 to SoCon opponent Furman over the weekend.  ASU out-hit Furman 32-20 but left 29 runners on base, including a combined 24 in Friday's doubleheader. 

About the Mountaineers

ASU is hitting .257 on the year and leads the Southern conference with 62 stolen bases.

The Mountaineers are led by junior third baseman Katie Boyd who ranks in the top-five in the SoCon in batting average (.378), slugging percentage (.662) and on base percentage (.551).  The Walkertown, N.C. native is just four runs scored away from breaking ASU's career runs record.  Lindsay Glover is the current record holder with 108.

Megan Rembielak and Sarah Rappe are coming off of outstanding weeks, with the top two hitters in the ASU lineup hitting .471 and .529 respectively.  Rembielak improved her average to .316 and leads the Apps with 31 hits while Rappe is hitting a season-best .293 and is tied for the SoCon lead with 19 stolen bases.

Freshman Allie Cashion continues to drive in runs from the clean-up spot, leading ASU and tied for second in the SoCon with 27 RBI.  She is just five away from tying Michelle Lighton's freshman record for RBI.

Sophomore Caitlin Wainright has set herself as one of the top pitchers in the SoCon, ranking second in the conference with a 1.49 ERA and leading ASU with eight wins and 68 strikeouts.

Hannah Dow was dominating in the Mountaineers' 4-0 win on Friday, tossing a three-hitter.  The junior dropped her ERA to 2.98 and is 4-5 on the year.

About the 49ers

Charlotte comes into Tuesday's doubleheader with a 23-6 record and is on a five-game winning streak.

Tenaya Tucker leads the team with a .365 batting average and has 24 RBI for a team that hits a collective .292.

Kendra McCall leads the 49ers' with a .360 average and 25 runs scored while Serena Smith is hitting .355 with a team-best 32 RBI.

Emily Jeffery leads the Charlotte pitching staff with a 13-4 record and a 1.28 ERA while Katy Hackett is 10-2 with a 2.66 ERA.

About the Hokies

Virginia Tech is 13-23 on the year and 2-7 in the ACC.

Whitney Davis leads the Hokies with a .321 batting average while Courtney Liddle is hitting just .238 but has seven homers and 13 RBI.

Jasmin Harrell leads the team in the circle with a 7-7 record and 2.58 ERA.

Over the Weekend

ASU returns to the High Country when they host UNC Greensboro on April 10 in a 1 p.m. doubleheader.

After ASU's game on Sunday versus UNCG, the Mountaineers will host a free clinic for girls ages 12 and under.  The clinic will be the first of two held by Appalachian and will discuss offensive fundamentals.  The second clinic will be held on Sunday, April 25 after the Apps' game against Chattanooga and will discuss defensive fundamentals.
