BOONE, N.C. - Chattanooga scored twice in the sixth to tie the game and two in the tenth to take the lead and hang on for a 4-2 win over Appalachian State University softball Sunday afternoon.
Playing the international tiebreaker, Kasey Tydingco was placed on second, and moved to third on a passed ball. ASU intentionally walked Tia Blosser and Tiffany Baker to load the bases. Nikki Waters hit a grounder to second but the home plate umpire ruled Tydingco just beat the throw. UTC added another run when Lauren Flores hit a slow roller to shortstop and the only play was at first, allowing Blosser to score from third.
Sarah Rappe was place on second to begin the bottom of the 10th, and was called out on a close play trying to steal third. Kandace Irwin retired the next two batters to end the game.
The Mountaineers got on the board in the bottom of the third when Rappe looped a two-out single to left, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on a Katie Boyd single.
The Apps made it 2-0 in the fourth inning, Meghan Smith led off with a triple to right field, the first of her career, and scored on a McKenzie Phillips RBI single.
UTC tied the score in the sixth when Brittany Eason hit a two-out, two-run single just out of Rembielak's reach at shortstop.
ASU's best chance to take the lead came in the seventh. Michelle Gorzelle reached on a single, Rembielak followed with a single to left and Boyd walked to load the baes, but Irwin got a pop up to end the inning.
Rembielak, Boyd and Phillips all had two hits to pace ASU's 10-hit attack, while Baker had two hits for UTC.
Hannah Dow started and went a solid seven innings for ASU, allowing six hits and two strikeouts. Frannie Seader suffered the tough-luck loss, not allowing a hit, striking out two.
Irwin picked up the win in relief to move to 9-0, going seven innings, giving up five hits and four strikeouts.
