Dow, Phillips Lead Softball Over Chattanooga

BOONE, N.C. - Hannah Dow allowed just two fifth inning singles to lead Appalachian State University softball to a 2-0 win over Chattanooga Saturday afternoon.  UTC won game one 3-1.

McKenzie Phillips drove in Megan Rembielak on an error by the UTC second baseman and Katie Boyd scored on a wild pitch to give all the runs Dow needed.

Dow was dominant in the complete game performance, allowing the first two Mocs' to reach base on an error and a walk, but retiring the next 15-of-16 before allowing back-to-back one-out singles in the sixth.  After the singled, Dow retired the next batter on a sacrfice bunt and got Tiffany Baker to pop out to end the threat before ending finishing UTC in order in the seventh.

Meghan Smith continued her torrid hitting over the past week, hitting a double in game two and two doubles in the first game.

It was the first ASU win over UTC since 2007 when the Apps won 3-2 at Frost Stadium in Chattanooga.

Brooke Loudermilk took the loss for UTC, allowing just one unearned run, giving up three hits with four strikeouts.

Kandice Irwin pitched 4.2 shutout innings in relief as Chattanooga won game one 3-1.

Appalachian took the lead in the bottom of the second on a Smith RBI double that drove in Phillips.

The Mocs scored their only three runs of the day in the third inning.  Jessica Traxler drove in a run on a bunt single and Kasey Tydingco worked a bases loaded walk to drive in a run.  Tia Blosser capped the inning with a sacrifice fly to score Traxler, who just beat the tag.

ASU had a chance in the third when they loaded the bases with one out, but Irwin came in to retire the side without any damage.

Smith led ASU with two hits, both doubles, while Lyndsey Stiles and Kaiti Kelly had two hits apiece to lead UTC.

ASU and UTC finish the three-game series tomorrow with a single game at 1 p.m.
