CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Allie Cashion hit a two-run single but it was not enough as Appalachian State University softball fell to North Carolina 6-2 Tuesday night at Anderson Stadium.
ASU fell behind early 6-0, but battled back in the top of the sixth.
Michelle Gorzelle led off the inning with a bunt single and
Sarah Rappe followed with another infield single. UNC pitcher Amber Johnson retired the next two batters, but Cashion ripped an 0-2 pitch up the middle to score Rappe and
Megan Rembielak.
UNC grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Danielle Spaulding hit a solo homer over the left center field fence. Christine Knauer led off the game for UNC with a single, but was thrown out stealing by
Michelle Lighton. It is just the third time Knauer was thrown out all season and the ninth thrown out by Lighton.
The Tar Heels took a 3-0 lead in the third inning, Stephanie Murad led off with a home run to left center and Constance Orr added an RBI single for the three-run lead.
Murad increased North Carolina's lead with her second homer of the day, a three-run shot that just cleared the fence in straightaway center field.
Lighton registered ASU's first hit of the contest in the fifth inning with a hard shot back to Johnson that she couldn't handle.
With her hit in the sixth inning, Rappe stretched her hitting streak to a season team-best 11 games and moved her average up to a season-high .306.
Spaulding earned her 17th win of the season, not allowing a hit in four innings while Johnson earned the save, pitching the final three, allowing four hits and the two runs.
Appalachian returns home this weekend as they host Chattanooga in a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m.
