Softball Drops Finale to CofC, 5-4
CHARLESTON, S.C. - Appalachian State University softball mounted a comeback but six errors doomed the Apps as they fell to College of Charleston 5-4 in the final game of the series on Sunday afternoon.

ASU committed five errors in the first three innings as the Cougars scored all of their runs in the first and third innings.

Appalachian trailed 5-1 heading into the sixth inning and rallied with three-straight two-out singles to close the gap.  Michelle Lighton and Meghan Smith hit one-out singles and Michelle Gorzelle hit a single to left center to drive in a run.  Sarah Rappe followed with an RBI single to drive in Smith and Megan Rembielak came up with another RBI single to make the score 5-4.

The Mountaineers couldn't overcome the defensive miscues from the first innings.  Charleston touched up ASU for two runs in the first inning, Amber Shifflett led off with a single, moved to second on a passed ball and scored on a Kristi double.  Kristi Shifflett reached on a throwing error and Woodall was able to score from second for an early 2-0 Charleston lead.

ASU got a run back in the second, McKenzie Phillips led off with a single, stole second and scored on an RBI double by Smith.  Smith came into the series with just five singles on the year, but produced three hits on the weekend, including her first career homer, double and multi-hit game.

The defensive struggles continued in the third, Kelley Dillon led off with a bunt single and Amanda Lonergan hit a chopper that bounced over the first baseman's head for a double to put runners on second and third.  Katie Forbes followed with an infield single to make the score 3-0.  Pinch runner Ashton Jarrett stole second and moved to third on an errant throw that also allowed Lonergan to score from third.  A sacrifice fly from Katie Pesature rounded out the scoring for the inning and gave CofC a four-run lead.

The Black and Gold missed an opportunity in the fifth when they left the bases loaded.  Gorzelle delivered a one-out hit and Rembielak and Boyd followed with walks, and Allie Cashion hit a foul ball that just stayed in play that was caught by the left fielder to end the inning.

Rembielak, Phillips, Smith and Gorzelle all had two hits for ASU while Forbes had two hits for CofC.  The Mountaineers out hit CofC 10-6.

Caitlin Wainright came in to pitch in relief, allowing just one hit and two strikeouts in 3.2 innings of work.  Mesko earned the win for CofC, allowing the 10 hits and the four earned runs, and struck out five.

Appalachian is back in action on Tuesday as they travel to North Carolina for a 5 p.m. game.
