Women's Tennis Closes Out 2010 Season With Loss to Samford
BOONE, N.C.- Appalachian State University women's tennis was unable to keep pace with a very good Samford squad Saturday afternoon, as the Apps suffered a 6-1 loss to the Bulldogs. With the defeat, the Mountaineers end the 2010 campaign with a 9-13 record and 2-8 league mark, while the Bulldogs improve to 16-5 overall and 8-1 in conference play.

The match began on a tough note for ASU, as the Black and Gold lost in all three doubles matches.

At the three spot, Christina Calott saw match action for the first time this season, playing with Caroline Mauch, but the two lost 8-1.

Unfortunately, Ellie Linsell and Laura Janke were also unsuccessful at the number one slot, losing 8-3 to their opponents and Samford clinched the doubles point.

The duo of Jennifer Ansari and Gisela Fernandez posted a solid effort, but fell short dropping an 8-4 decision to Rebecca Kirven and Andrie Meiring at the two spot.

Things did not get much easier in singles action for Appalachian as the Mountaineers one just one match.

Janke was defeated in two sets at the five spot to Kirven, while Ansari was beaten 6-1, 6-1 by Meiring.

Heather Prior lost at the six spot as well, falling 6-0, 6-0 to give Samford the match victory.

Both Fernandez and Mauch suffered losses at the four and three positions, while Linsell had the most impressive performance of the match, beating Morgan at the number one slot, winning 6-2, 3-6 and 13-11 in the tiebreaker.

ASU returns eight players for the 2011 season, graduating Caroline Mauch and Amanda Cash.
