Wainright Shuts Down Charleston to Lead Softball
CHARLESTON, S.C. - Caitlin Wainright struck out seven in six innings and McKenzie Phillips had three hits to lead Appalachian State University softball to an 8-2 win over College of Charleston in game two Saturday afternoon.  CofC won game one 5-2.

With the split, ASU moves to 22-18 overall and 7-9 in the SoCon while the Cougars are now 18-19 and 6-7 in conference play.

Phillips led ASU with a 3-for-4 day at the plate with a run scored and two RBI.  Sarah Rappe and Megan Rembielak each had two hits for the Mountaineers'.

Appalachian got on the board in the third inning when Allie Cashion drove in Rembielak with an RBI ground out.  Phillips followed with a line drive single to right center to score Katie Boyd for the 2-0 lead.

The Apps increased the lead to 5-0 with a three-spot in the fifth inning.  Phillips led off with a line drive to left field that got by the left fielder and all the way to the fence, allowing Phillips to come all the way around to score.  Michelle Lighton continued the rally with a double down the left field line and Hannah Dow and Michelle Gorzelle walked to load the bases.  Gorzelle battled through a 13-pitch at bat, fouling off five-straight pitches before earning the walk.  Boyd followed with another walk to bring home pinch runner Hayley Grabner.

The Apps ended any hope of a CofC comeback with three runs in the top of the seventh.  Dow and Gorzelle led off with singles and Rembielak loaded the bases with a walk.  Boyd hit a single up the middle and Cashion had an RBI walk before Phillips capped the scoring with a sacrifice fly.

Wainright was dominant in the win, allowing just three hits and an earned run with seven strikeouts.  Amanda Lonergan had two hits to lead CofC.

College of Charleston scored two fourth inning runs to take the lead and hung on for a 5-2 game one win.

Terri Mesko pitched a complete game, scattering seven hits and nine strikeouts.

The Mountaineers got on the board in the top of the first when Phillips hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Rappe.  Rappe led off the game with a single to stretch her hitting streak to eight games.

The Cougars got the run back in the bottom half of the inning with an unearned run.

Meghan Smith
gave ASU the lead back to lead off the top of the second with her first home run of her career.

CofC tied the game again in the third when Kristie Shifflett hit a home run over the center field fence.

College of Charleston continued their offensive attack in the fourth, taking the lead for good with two runs.  Hillary Stringer and Amber Shifflett provided the run-scoring hits for the Cougars'.

Rappe led the ASU offense with two hits while Amber Woodall, Kristie Shifflett and Forbes all had two hits for CofC.
