BOONE, N.C. - Hannah Dow and
Ashley Stubbs each pitched complete games as Appalachian State University softball took both games in a doubleheader versus North Carolina A&T, winning 2-1 and 4-2.
The Mountaineers (21-17) jumped on the Aggies (16-19) early in game one, scoring both runs in the first inning.
Sarah Rappe led off the game with a single, stole second and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by
Megan Rembielak. Rappe scored on an RBI single by
McKenzie Phillips, and Phillips scored on an
Allie Cashion RBI double.
That was all the support Dow needed, allowing just one hit through the first four innings before allowing a run in the fifth. She scattered four hits and struck hit six in the victory.
ASU did not record a hit off Aggie pitcher Jennifer Luper after the first, but the Apps hung on for the victory.
Cashion had two double and two RBI and Stubbs allowed just two runs to lift Appalachian to a 4-2 win in game two.
NC A&T started the scoring in the second with a Jessie Larson RBI single, but ASU battled back in the bottom half of the inning. Cashion led off with a ringing double to right field and scored when
Michelle Lighton reached on an error.
Lighton and Cashion got ASU on the board again in the fourth. Cashion led off with another double and scored on a single by Lighton. Lighton scored when
Michelle Gorzelle reached on another Aggie error.
The Apps tacked on another run in the fifth with another RBI single from Lighton.
Cashion led ASU with a 3-for-3 day while Lighton and Phillips had two hits apiece. Danielle Nguyen had two hits to lead NC A&T.
Stubbs earned her first win of the season, going the distance, allowing six hits while striking out two.
Appalachian is back on the road Saturday as they travel to conference foe College of Charleston for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
