ELON, N.C.- Appalachian State University men's tennis came up short against Southern Conference foe Elon Tuesday afternoon, as the Apps dropped a 6-1 decision to the Phoenix. With the loss, ASU falls to 11-9 on the season and 3-6 in SoCon action, while Elon improves to 7-13 overall and 6-4 in league play.
Appalachian posted a solid effort early on, but was unable to come away with the crucial doubles point.
The team of Andrew McKinnon and Britton Webb were defeated by Eric Turner and Thomas Darling at the number three spot, losing 8-5.
However, Trent Constance and Peter Jacobs got the Black and Gold back on track, eeking out an 8-6 win at the number one slot over Chase Helpingstine and Alberto Rojas.
In a very hard fought and closely played match at the two position, Philip Kloc and Alain Humblet were unable to come away with a victory, falling 9-8, giving Elon the early 1-0 advantage.
Things didn't get much easier for the Mountaineers in singles play, as freshman Ezekiel Sansing lost in two sets, dropping a 6-0, 6-3 decision to Darling.
Jacobs was unsuccessful as well at the two slot, as he was defeated in two sets by Philip Nemec, making the match score 3-1.
Constance tried to rally a comeback for the Apps, as he handily beat Turner, winning 6-3, 6-3.
Unfortunately, that was the lone win of the day for ASU, as both McKinnon and Humblet suffered losses at the five and two positions.
Appalachian closes out the 2010 season Sunday April 18, as the Apps host Davidson at 1 p.m. on the ASU Tennis Courts.
