BOONE, N.C.- Appalachian State University women's tennis fell short to Southern Conference foe Davidson Sunday afternoon, as the Mountaineers suffered a 5-2 loss to the Wildcats. With the loss, ASU falls to 9-12 overall and 2-7 in league action, while Davidson improves to 13-6 on the season and 5-2 in conference play.
The match started off rocky for the Black and Gold, as the Apps were defeated in all three doubles matches.
Partners Ellie Linsell and Olivia Stannard lost to Virginia Berry and Teresa Wang 8-1 at the one spot, while Caroline Mauch and Jennifer Ansari also lost, falling 8-4 at the three position.
Despite a solid effort and leading much of the match, Laura Janke and Gisela Fernandez could not keep pace with their opponents at the two slot and dropped an 8-6 decision.
In singles action, Mauch lost in two sets to Stephani Synn at the three spot, while Ansari also lost at the two position in two sets, losing to Wang.
Janke had a solid showing against Samantha Galainena at the six slot, but also lost in two sets, falling 6-4, 6-4 and the Wildcats clinched the match.
Although the match was already decided, sophomore Blakeley Bean earned a strong win at the four spot, eeking out hard-fought three set win over Alison Rauh.
Linsell was also victorious at the one spot, grabbing a huge win over Berry. After losing the first set 2-6, the England native squeaked out a 7-5 second set victory and 10-6 win in the third set which was played as a pro set tiebreaker due to the match already being decided.
Capping off singles action, Fernandez lost to Ali Gores in three tough sets, after beating Gores in the first set 7-5.
The Mountaineers close out the 2010 season, Sunday April 17 as they take on Samford at Noon on the ASU Tennis Courts.
