BOONE, N.C. - Amber Harrell pitched a complete game, scattering six hits as UNC Greensboro beat Appalachian State University softball 3-1 Sunday afternoon at Sywassink/Lloyd Family Stadium.
Appalachian (19-17, 6-8) had runners on base in six-of-seven innings and loaded the bases in the bottom of the first, but came up empty.
UNC Greensboro got on the board in the second when Laura Olenderski hit an RBI single to right field. The Spartans tacked on another run in the third when Jordan Jewett reached on an error, stole second and scored on Alex Emeterio's RBI single.
The Mountaineers got to within one in the fourth,
McKenzie Phillips struck out to begin the inning, but reached on a wild pitch on the third strike. Phillips stole second and advanced to third on a
Michelle Lighton fly out.
Michelle Gorzelle followed with a bunt single, and Phillips was stuck in a rundown, but the UNCG catcher dropped the throw from the third baseman to allow Phillips to score.
UNCG (17-21, 6-5) got a run back in the sixth with a Heather Robb home run.
The Mountaineers' best chance to score runs came in the sixth,
Sarah Rappe led off with a double and
Megan Rembielak followed with a single and
Katie Boyd walked to load the bases, but Harrell was able to retire the side with a strikeout and two fly outs.
Gorzelle had her second-straight multi-hit game and her first career three-hit game to lead ASU, while Emeterio and Robb had two hits apiece for UNCG.
Hannah Dow suffered the loss, giving up three hits in two innings and two unearned runs. Harrell went the distance, allowing just the one unearned run with 11 strikeouts.
Appalachian is back in action on Wednesday when they host North Carolina A&T in a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
