BOONE, N.C. - Frannie Seader pitched three scoreless innings and Louise Gibson scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh to give Appalachian State a 3-2 walk-off win over UNC Greensboro in game one. UNCG won game two 4-2 in eight innings.
With the scored tied at two, Hannah Dow reached base in the bottom of the second when she struck out but the ball got away from the UNCG catcher. Hayley Grabner sacrificed pinch runner Gibson to second and advanced to third on Sarah Rappe's single and Rappe moved to second on the throw. Megan Rembielak followed with a line drive to left field that Brittany Ausley caught, but Gibson ran on contact and went back to third, but Ausley's throw into second went by the Spartans' second baseman and Gibson was able to score the game-winner.
UNC Greensboro took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third when Alex Emeterio hit a two-out single up the middle to score Brittany Ausley.
ASU came right back with two runs to take the lead. Rappe and Rembielak each singled and Allie Cashion hit a two-run single off the right field fence. With the two RBI, Cashion broke the ASU freshman RBI record with her 33rd of the year.
Whitney Sirois singled in Emily Akiyama in the fourth to tie the game at two.
Rembielak and Rappe each had two hits for ASU while Ausley led UNCG with two hits.
Seader earned the win in relief, giving up just two hits and striking out five. Amber Harrell picked up the moss, going 6.2 innings, allowing seven hits and three runs, two earned.
Akiyama hit a two-run double off the right field fence to give UNCG a 4-2 eight inning victory in game two.
Michelle Lighton gave Appalachian a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third when drove in McKenzie Phillips with an RBI single.
Akiyama tied the score in the fourth with a sacrifice fly but the Apps responed in the fourth when Katie Boyd lined a single into right field to drive in Rappe.
Kaitlin Merkt hit an RBI single for UNCG in the top of the sixth to send the game into extra innings.
Cory Mattson went the distance for UNCG, giving up two runs on eight hits with eight strikeouts. Seader suffered the loss, going 4.2 innings with four strikeouts.
The Mountaineers left 13 runners on base, including the bases loaded twice.
Michelle Gorzelle had two hits for her fifth multi-hit game of the year, while Merkt and Akiyama had two hits apiece for UNCG.
The two squads play the finale tomorrow at 1 p.m. Appalachian will have a free clinic for girls ages 12 and under after the game.
