Women's Tennis Down Western Carolina 6-1

BOONE, N.C.- Appalachian State University women's tennis won its second-straight match Saturday afternoon, as the Mountaineers hammered Southern Conference rival Western Carolina 6-1. With the victory, the Black and Gold improve to 9-11 on the season and 2-6 in league action, while WCU drops to 3-12 overall and 1-7 in conference play.

Appalachian got the match off to a solid start, winning two of three doubles matches and earning the doubles point.

The duo of Ellie Linsell and Olivia Stannard had no problem with Amanda Massey and Layne Arnold, grabbing an 8-1 win at the number slot. Unfortunately, Jennifer Ansari and Caroline Mauch could not keep pace with their competitors at the three position, falling 8-2.

The team of Gisela Fernandez and Laura Janke posted an impressive performance and eeked out an 8-6 win at the two spot, to put ASU up 1-0 in the match.

In singles play, Mauch suffered a 6-1, 6-1 defeat to Carolina Lainez at the three spot to even the match at one all.

That was the last loss for the Apps in singles action however, as they went on to win the next five matches.

Linsell cruised past Izabell Glinska 6-0, 6-2 at the number one position, while Heather Prior beat Emily Turke 6-3, 6-0 at the six spot.

Both Fernandez and Bean were victorious as well at the five and four slots, both winning in two sets, while Ansari squeaked out a three set victory at the two position.

Appalachian continues with SoCon action, as the Apps host Davidson, Sunday April 11. The match is set to begin at 3 p.m. at the ASU Tennis Courts.
