BOONE, N.C.- Appalachian State University women's tennis fell just short to Southern Conference opponent Georgia Southern Sunday morning, as the Apps lost a tough 4-3 decision to the Eagles. With the loss, ASU drops to 7-8 on the season and 1-4 in the SoCon, while GSU improves to 9-7 overall and 4-3 in conference action.
The Apps started the match off strong, winning the ever-important doubles point, capturing victories in two out of three matches.
The team of Ellie Linsell and Olivia Stannard picked up an 8-3 win at the number one spot over Ashley Hungerford and Melanie Rolle, while Jennifer Ansari and Gisela Fernandez earned an 8-4 victory at the three position.
Despite a solid performance, Blakeley Bean and Laura Janke dropped an intense 8-7 decision to Ali Beavers and Allison Beeler at the two spot.
Linsell continued with her dominating showing as she downed Beavers 6-3, 6-3 at the one singles spot. Unfortunately, Ansari could not follow suit, losing in two sets to Rolle at the two position.
Stannard was unsuccessful as well at the three spot, but Caroline Mauch notched a resounding 7-5, 6-2 win at the four position.
Mauch had the Apps' last singles win of the match however, as Bean lost to Hungerford in three highly competitive sets and Fernandez was defeated 6-3, 6-0 at the six position.
The Mountaineers take to the road for the final time this season, as they travel to Greenville, S.C. to battle conference-power Furman, March 31 at 2 p.m.
