BOONE, N.C.- Appalachian State University men's tennis posted a quite impressive performance Saturday afternoon, but the Mountaineers could not hang on for a win, as the Apps suffered a tough 4-3 loss to No. 69 College of Charleston. With the loss, ASU drops to 7-6 on the season and 0-3 in conference action, while CofC improves to 11-3 overall and a spotless 5-0 in Southern Conference play.
Continuing with its doubles dominance, the Black and Gold captured two of three wins in doubles play.
The team of
Trent Constance and
Peter Jacobs easily defeated Lukas Koncilia and Tom Delme 8-2 at the number one spot.
Alain Humblet and
Philip Kloc followed suit, as the duo rallied a comeback after falling behind 0-3 to hand John Harden and Kyle Parker an 8-6 loss at the two spot, and secure the doubles point.
The freshman team of
Andrew McKinnonn and
Ezekiel Sansing gave a solid effort, but could not come away with a win, as they fell at the three position to their competitors 8-6.
Humblet's strong singles play pushed ASU out to a 2-0 match lead, as the Canada native downed Mickael Boyer 6-4, 6-3 at the four singles spot.
After falling 6-3 in the first set, Sansing was victorious in the next set winning 7-5, but Harden was able to eek, out the victory at the six spot, winning the third set by a 7-5 margin.
Kloc also lost in three sets at the three position to Delme, and CofC evened the match at two all.
However, McKinnonn came up big for the Mountaineers, as the freshman came back after losing the first set to Parker 7-5, to win 6-3, 6-4 in the next set and put ASU back on top 3-2.
At the two spot, Constance was unsuccessful against Mickael Trintignac losing in two sets and in the match-winner, Jacobs won the first set by fell in the next two by a score of 6-4, 6-4 and CofC came away with the heartbreaking victory.
With little time to rest, the Apps continue with the 2010 season as they host Georgia Southern, Sunday March 28. The match is set to begin at Noon at the Grandfather Mountain tennis courts.
