GREENVILLE, S.C.- Appalachian State University men's tennis posted a valiant effort but fell just short Wednesday afternoon, as the Mountaineers dropped a 5-2 decision to Southern Conference rival Furman. With the loss, ASU falls to 7-5 on the season and 0-2 in conference action, while Furman improves to 6-9 overall and a spotless 3-0 in the SoCon.
The Black and Gold came out strong in doubles play, as the team of
Trent Constance and
Peter Jacobs downed Jordan Walters and Carl Lundberg at the number one spot, winning 8-4. The duo of
Alain Humblet and
Philip Kloc secured the doubles point for ASU, as they ran past Chris Motes and Robert Bruner 8-6.
Appalachian's lone loss in doubles came at the number three spot as
Andrew McKinnonn and
Ezekiel Sansing posted a strong performance but fell short at the three position, losing to Andrew Mellow and Tyler Droll 8-6.
After ASU took an early 1-0 match lead Furman rebounded, as Chris Motes handed Jacobs a 6-1, 6-1 defeat at the number two spot.
Unfortunately for the Mountaineers McKinnonn suffered the same fate as Jacobs at the number five spot, losing in two sets to Andrew Mellow, falling 6-1, 6-1.
Sansing was also unsuccessful at the number six spot, losing 6-2, 6-4 and despite a solid effort Humblet was unable to keep pace with Lundberg at the three spot and Furman earned the match victory.
In the final two singles matches, Constance lost to Sawyer Duncan 6-3, 6-2 while Kloc earned the only singles victory, beating Walters in three hard fought sets, winning 2-6. 6-0 and 10-7.
Looking to get back on track, Appalachian returns to action Friday March 26, as the Apps host College of Charleston at 2 p.m. on the ASU Tennis Courts.
