Wheeler Leads Men's Golf at Furman Intercollegiate

GREENVILLE, S.C. - Lance Wheeler carded a one-under par 71 in Saturday's second round and finished 18th to lead Appalachian State University men's golf at the Furman Intercollegiate. The Mountaineers placed 20th at 313-313-307=933 (+69).

Wheeler tallied a three-day score of 75-71-77=223 (+7) with the 71 matching his lowest round of 2009-10.

Casey Johnson placed 51st in the field with a 76-78-75=229 (+13) while Jacob Eggers was 126th with a 82-85-77=244 (+28).

Jake Wiesehan was a stroke back at 80-79-86=245 (+29) in 128th and Dustin Hudson finished 129th at 82-86-78=246 (+30).

Clemson carded a final round 282 to rally from a three-stroke deficit on Sunday and claim the team title at the par-72, 6,994-yard Furman University Golf Course. Chattanooga's Steven Fox drained a birdie putt on his final hole to share individual medalist honors with the Tigers' Ben Martin at six-under par.

In addition to UTC (second place) and host Furman (third), five other Southern Conference teams competed at the event. Western Carolina placed fourth, Wofford tied for eighth, Samford finished 13th, Elon tied for 16th and Davidson was 13 strokes ahead of the Apps in 18th place.

The men host the University Cup at Morganton's Mimosa Hills Country Club on Thursday, March 25.
