BOONE, N.C.- Appalachian State University women's tennis was unable to keep pace with a tough College of Charleston team Sunday afternoon, as the Mountaineers dropped a 7-0 decision to its Southern Conference rival. With the loss, ASU falls to an even 7-7 on the season and 1-3 in league play, while the Cougars improve to a stout 13-8 and an undefeated 6-0 in conference action.
The duo of
Olivia Stannard and
Ellie Linsell got Appalachian off to an impressive start, as they defeated Irene Viana and Kinsey Casey 8-4 at the number spot in doubles play.
However the team of
Blakeley Bean and
Laura Janke could not withstand Anna Lee Evans and Laura Borza at the two position, falling 8-0, while
Gisela Fernandez and
Jennifer Ansari suffered an 8-1 defeat at the number three spot to give CofC the doubles point.
Things did not get much easier for the Mountaineers in singles play as Linsell lost in two sets, falling 7-6, 6-1 to Holly Dowse at the one spot. Ansari could not come away with a win either, as she was defeated in two sets as well at the two position.
Despite solid efforts, both Stannard and
Caroline Mauch lost in two sets at the three and four positions, while Bean and Fernandez were unsuccessful in the match as well at their respective positions, as both lost in two sets.
Looking to rebound, Appalachian continues with its homestand, as the Apps welcome Davidson to the High Country, Thursday March 25. The match is set to begin at 3 p.m. at the ASU Tennis Courts.
