ELON, N.C. - Appalachian State University softball was unable to hold two leads, falling 3-2 in the series finals at Elon Sunday afternoon.
With the score tied at two in the bottom of the seventh, Tomeka Watson hit a two-out single and raced all the way home on a Emerald Graham hit down the right field line to score the winning run for Elon.
Appalachian (12-9, 3-3) took the first lead of the game for the first time in the series when Katie Boyd hit her team-leading fourth homer of the season to give ASU a 1-0 first inning lead.
Elon (17-5,3-3) tied the score in the third when Hannah Shelton stole third and scored on a throwing error by the ASU catcher.
The Mountaineers retook the lead in the fifth with Boyd playing a major role again. The junior battled and reached on a walk, stole second and scored on an RBI single by Allie Cashion.
The lead was short lived, however, as Elon tied the score in the bottom half of the inning. Graham did the damage again, driving in the tying run with an RBI single. Graham's game-tying single was with two outs, as four of the games five runs came with two outs, including Elon's game-winner.
Boyd led ASU with two hits while Watson and Graham had two hits apiece for Elon.
Caitlin Wainright started the game for ASU, giving up two hits and one unearned run. Frannie Seader picked up the loss, going 2.2 innings, giving up five hits and two earned runs. Erin O'Shea earned the win in relief, going 3.1 innings, allowing three hits and one earned run.
ASU returns to action on Thursday, March 25 when they host Gardner-Webb in the home opener at 4 p.m.
