SPARTANBURG, S.C.- Appalachian State University women's tennis snapped a three-match losing streak, as the Mountaineers handed Southern Conference foe Wofford a 5-2 loss Saturday afternoon. With the win ASU improves to 7-6 on the season and 1-2 in SoCon action, while Wofford drops to 1-12 on the season and 0-2 in conference play.
Appalachian began its dominance early, as the Black and Gold easily swept through all three doubles matches, picking up wins in each of them.
The team of
Jennifer Ansari and
Gisela Fernandez started the Mountaineers off strong, as the duo downed Lindsay Larkin and Stephanie Cox 8-5 at the number three spot.
Laura Janke and
Blakeley Bean followed suit, beating their competitors at the number two spot by the same score.
Keeping ASU spotless on the afternoon in doubles action,
Ellie Linsell and
Olivia Stannard grabbed an 8-6 win at the number one position as well.
Linsell kept with her impressive performance, as she downed Sabrina Smyers at the number one singles spot, earning a resounding 6-1, 6-1 victory.
The Terriers tried to rally a comeback, cutting into ASU's lead, making the match score 2-1, as
Caroline Mauch was unable to hang with Stephanie Cox, as she suffered a 6-0, 6-3 loss at the number four spot.
Bean was able to keep the Mountaineers on top, as she beat Larkin 6-4, 7-5 at the five position. However, ASU was unable to close out the match win as Stannard fell short at the three spot, losing 7-5, 6-3 to Guinn Garcia.
Although Appalachian was up just 3-2, Fernandez and Ansari came up big when it counted, as Fernandez was victorious at the six position, winning 6-2, 6-2 over Lucy Schermerhorn and Ansari earned a win as well, defeating Haley Baird in three sets at the two spot.
With little time to rest, the Apps return to action Sunday, March 21 to host College of Charleston. Due to possible late afternoon showers in the High Country, the match has been moved up to 10 a.m. and will be played at the ASU Tennis courts, behind the Appalachian Athletic Complex.
