BOONE, N.C. - ASU athletics mourns the passing of Hall of Fame track and field coach Bob Pollock,60, who passed away Saturday after a battle with lung cancer.
As head coach of the Mountaineer track and field program from 1974-88, Pollock guided ASU to five outdoor and five indoor Southern Conference championships. He also led the Appalachian men to the 1987 SoCon cross country title. During his tenure in Boone, Pollock mentored three all-Americans and guided eight athletes to appearances in the NCAA Championships. Pollock was named SoCon coach of the year five times and inducted into the ASU Athletics Hall of Fame on Sept. 7, 1996.
Pollock's tenure at ASU came to a close in 1988, when he became head track and field coach at Clemson where he led the Tigers to 21 ACC championships in his 20 seasons at the helm. Fourteen of Pollock's student-athletes at Clemson went on to compete in the Olympics including Shawn Crawford, who won the gold medal in the 200m at the 2004 Athens Games, and Carlton Chambers, who was a member of Canada's gold medal winning 4x100m relay team at the 1996 Games in Atlanta.
A visitation will be held at Duckett-Robinson Funeral Home in Central, S.C. at 6 p.m. Thursday and Pollock's funeral will be held at St. Mark's Methodist Church in Seneca, S.C. Friday at 10 a.m.
