MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Appalachian State University softball beat IPFW and Southeast Missouri State on Saturday at the Blues City Classic to move to 3-1 on the season. ASU beat IPFW 6-2 and topped SEMO 10-2 Saturday night.
Allie Cashion hit a three-run double in the first inning, as ASU scored four runs in the first and the Apps never looked back in the win over the Mastadons.
Freshman
Frannie Seader picked up her first collegiate win, pitching six innings, allowing five hits while striking out five.
The Mountaineers gave her an early cushion as
Sarah Rappe led off the bottom of the first with a walk, followed by a
Megan Rembielak bunt single and a
Katie Boyd walk. Cashion hammered a double to right-center to clear the bases. After a wild pitch,
Michelle Gorzelle drove in Cashion with an RBI groundout to give ASU a four-spot in the first.
ASU gave Seader another run on an RBI single by
Meghan Smith that drove in
McKenzie Phillips to give ASU a 5-0 lead.
Boyd added another insurance run in the sixth with a sacrifice fly that scored Rappe in the fifth.
IPFW scored two runs in the sixth but that was it as ASU hung on for the win.
Rembielak had a career-high three hits to lead ASU.
Boyd,
Phillips and
Hayley Grabner each had two hits as the Mountaineers hammered Southeast Missouri State 10-2 Saturday night.
ASU scored five runs in the second to break the game open. Gorzelle started the big inning with a one-out triple, and after a Phillips walk
Meagan Squartino drove in Gorzelle with an RBI single. Rappe drove in Phillips with a sac fly and after a Rembielak walk, Boyd hit a bases clearing triple for the commanding 5-0 lead.
The Mountaineers tacked on two more in the third with RBI hits by Phillips and Grabner. ASU tacked on three more in the third to invoke the eight-run rule to end the game.
Lost in the scoring onslaught was the pitching of
Hannah Dow, who shut down SEMO, allowing just four hits in five innings with eight strikeouts.
The Apps close out the tournament with an 11 a.m. game Sunday against McNeese State.
