Softball Tops Indiana State in Opener, Falls to Memphis in Game Two
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Caitlin Wainright pitched a complete game, striking out seven and Allie Cashion drove in the game's only run to give Appalachian State University softball a 1-0 win over Indiana State in the season-opener.  ASU dropped their second game of the day to Memphis, 5-2.

In the bottom of the fifth inning versus ISU, Katie Boyd worked a two-out walk to bring up Cashion who hit a gapper to right-center to bring in Boyd with the winning run.

Wainright held the Sycamores in check the majority of the game, scattering just four hits. The Sycamores' best chance came in the third when Stephanie Robinson reached on an error and Alyssa Doyle was hit by a pitch. Wainright got the next batter to ground into a fielder's choice, and Alyssa Marcum singled to center but Sarah Rappe threw out Doyle at home to end the threat.

Appalachian had a chance to take the lead in the fourth when Hannah Dow led off the inning with a double and advanced to third on a wild pitch, but the Apps were unable to bring her home.

Boyd went 1-for-2 in the opener with a walk and stolen base while Cashion had a walk to go along with her game-winning hit. Wainright pitched the first ever opening-day shutout for ASU.

MacKenzie Connelly had three of Indiana State's four hits. Meagan McCurdy pitched a complete game in the circle, allowing four hits and struck out eight.

In the second game, Boyd hit a two-run homer but ASU had six errors and fell to the University of Memphis 5-2.

The Mountaineers grabbed the lead in the third inning.  Megan Rembielak led off with a walk and Boyd followed with a towering shot over the scoreboard in right-center field to give ASU the lead.

ASU pitcher Dow was cruising until the fifth inning, when the Tigers scored all five of its runs, aided by four ASU errors in the inning.  Heather Mott and Leigh Rowan had the big hits in the hitting with each having an RBI double.

Dow suffered the loss, going 4.1 innings, giving up four earned runs and striking out five with no walks.  Carly Hummel earned the win for Memphis, pitching the final three innings in relief striking out seven and did not allow a hit.

“I was very proud of the way we played and the effort that we gave today, ASU head coach Amy Herrington said.  “We played well defensively today except for one inning, ran the bases well and pitched well.  Our hitters need to be more aggressive tomorrow, but we're excited with the way the day went.”

Appalachian takes on IPFW tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. and Southeast Missouri State at 9:15 p.m.
