Appalachian State University football closes the regular season with its biggest challenge of the slate — a matchup versus traditional national power Florida. Kickoff at “The Swamp,” Ben Hill Griffin Stadium at Florida Field in Gainesville, Fla., is set for 12:30 p.m.
Saturday's game will be televised on a pay-per-view basis. Viewers outside of Florida can see the game via ESPN's GamePlan package. In Florida, viewers must check with their cable/satellite provider for availability in their area.
The television broadcast will also be streamed live online at ESPN3.com (except in Florida). As always, live streaming audio of the Appalachian ISP Sports Network's radio broadcast is available at GoASU.com.
There are a number of viewing parties planned for the game, including one at Legends on the ASU campus in Boone. Doors open at 11:45 a.m. and free admission will be limited to the first 1,000 people to arrive. Pizza and soft drinks will be available for purchase.
NOTING SATURDAY'S MATCHUP
• Appalachian (9-1, 7-1 SoCon) wrapped up a record-tying sixth-consecutive Southern Conference championship and the league's automatic bid to the 2010 NCAA Division I Football Championship with a convincing 43-13 victory over No. 4 Wofford last Saturday.
• Saturday's game marks the first time since 2001 that ASU closes the regular season with a non-conference game and the first time since 1988 that it wraps up the regular season against an NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (formerly Division I-A) opponent.
• Since the inception of NCAA Division I football subdivisions in 1978, Appalachian is 7-37-1 against Division I-A/FBS competition.
• The most recognizable of ASU's seven FBS victories came in 2007, when the Mountaineers toppled No. 5 Michigan, 34-32, at Michigan Stadium. The victory was the first ever by an FCS team over a nationally ranked FBS opponent.
• The matchup pits the winners of five of the last 10 NCAA Division I football national championships. ASU won FCS titles in 2005, '06 and '07 and Florida claimed Bowl Championship Series titles in 2006 and '08.
• Saturday's meeting is the first ever between Appalachian and Florida.
• The trip is ASU's first to the state of Florida since 1962.
• Appalachian is 1-11 all-time against current members of the Southeastern Conference.
• Florida (6-4, 4-4 SEC) has lost four of its last six games and has won only one game in regulation since September.
• Florida, which was a member of the Southern Conference from 1922-32, is 24-2 all-time versus current members of the SoCon.
• The Gators are 11-0 against I-AA/FCS opponents since the creation of Division I football subdivisions in 1978, winning those 11 games by an average score of 50-8.
