ASU Set to Battle Wofford for SoCon Title

For the second-straight season, the Southern Conference championship comes down to one game when Appalachian State University hosts Wofford on Saturday at Kidd Brewer Stadium. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m.

Saturday's game will be televised across the Southeast on SportSouth. Due to the contractual agreement between SportSouth and the Southern Conference, live streaming video will not be available for Saturday's game but the Appalachian ISP Sports Network radio broadcast of the game can be heard for free at GoASU.com. An archive of the game's video broadcast will be available to GoASU TV premium subscribers on Saturday evening.

For the 34th-consecutive regular-season game at The Rock, reserved seats for Saturday's showdown are sold out. General-admission grass seats remain and can be purchased by clicking HERE.

NOTING SATURDAY'S MATCHUP
• The winner earns no less than a share of the SoCon title and the league's automatic berth in the NCAA Division I Football Championship.

• A win would give Appalachian (8-1, 6-1 SoCon) its sixth-straight SoCon championship, which would match the conference's record for most consecutive titles. Georgia Southern won six-straight SoCon championships from 1997-2002.

• Wofford (8-1, 6-0 SoCon) would win the SoCon title outright with a victory this afternoon. ASU needs a win against Wofford and for the Terriers to lose again next Saturday against Chattanooga to earn the conference championship outright.

• This marks the second year in a row that the Mountaineers are playing in a de facto SoCon championship game. Last season, ASU demolished Elon, 27-10, in a winner-take-all game to earn its fifth-straight conference title.

• Appalachian is 10-2 all-time in games when it has a chance to clinch at least a share of the SoCon championship with a win.

• For the second time in their last three meetings, both ASU and Wofford are ranked in the top-5 nationally. On Oct. 31, 2008, No. 2 Appalachian demolished No. 3 Wofford, 70-24, in a nationally televised contest at Kidd Brewer Stadium.

• Wofford is the only SoCon team besides Georgia Southern to defeat ASU in the past four seasons. The Terriers snapped a 17-game Mountaineers' winning streak — the longest in all of Division I — with a 42-31 victory in Spartanburg, S.C. on Sept. 22, 2007.

• Both teams feature rushing attacks ranked in the top 10 nationally. Wofford leads the nation with 326.1 rushing yards per game out of its vaunted “wingbone” attack while ASU's 224.9 rushing yards per game rank 10th.

• The squads also boast the SoCon's top two rushing defenses. Wofford allows only 127.9 yards per game on the ground while ASU surrenders just 139.1.

• Appalachian, which failed to score 30 points for the first time this season last Saturday at Georgia Southern, still ranks among the nation's top 10 in scoring (36.3 ppg), total offense (449.1 ypg), passing efficiency (151.57) and rushing (224.9 ypg).
