Dreybus Goal Gives Men's Soccer Second SoCon Victory
SPARTANBURG, S.C.- Junior Sean Dreybus netted his fourth goal of the season at the 59:49 minute mark to give Appalachian State University men's soccer (5-4-2, 2-0 SoCon) a 1-0 win over Wofford (1-7-2, 0-3 SoCon) Tuesday night at Snyder Field.

The win gave the Mountaineers their second SoCon victory of the season, marking the 16th time in program history that ASU has started their conference slate, 2-0. It is also the second time in three years that Appalachian has started 2-0 under head coach Shaun Pendleton.

Sophomore Ethan Durland took Appalachian's first shot 3:54 into the match, but it was saved by Andrew Drennan. Sophomore David Dodge rebounded Durland's shot, but it went wide.

After Dreybus took his first corner kick of the contest at 12:19, Dodge headed the ball and it sailed wide. The Apps pushed the ball back down the field following the change in possession from an ASU foul and Dreybus attempted his first shot of the match, but it was saved by Drennan.

The Terriers attempted two shots at 25:35 and 26:08, but Wilson Hood's shot was blocked, while Andrew Eppelsheimer's header went high. Those were the last two shots of the period that the Mountaineers would allow Wofford to attempt.

Dreybus took two more shots to attempt to give the Black and Gold an advantage, but the first half ended in a scoreless tie.

Adding to his three first-half shots, Dreybus attempted his next shot of the match at 51:42, but it was converted into another save for Drennan. Dreybus came right back and nailed what would be the game-winning shot from a deflection off Drennan.

Kentrel Owens tried to even the score as time was running out with less than five minutes left, but it was saved by junior Drake Branson. Ryan Hurst tried to follow up the shot with one of his own, but it was saved by Branson.

Dreybus ended the match leading the Mountaineers with one goal and five shots with three shots being SOG. Dodge had two and Durland had one to round out ASU's eight shots. Appalachian's defense held Wofford to only four shots, with only two being shot on goal.

Branson (1-1) notched the decision for the Apps, recording his first win and shutout of the season, while Drennan took the loss.

The Mountaineers return to action on Saturday (Oct. 16), taking on Furman in Greenville, S.C. Play is set to kick off at 7 p.m. from Stone Soccer Stadium.
