Women's Tennis Crushes NC A&T, Picks Up 7-0 Win

GREENSBORO, N.C.- Appalachian State University women's tennis was able to rebound from its season-opening defeat and down NC A&T Sunday afternoon, as the Mountaineers notched a 7-0 victory over the Aggies. With the win, Appalachian earns its first victory of the season and improves to 1-1 overall while NC A&T drops to 0-3.

The Black and Gold started off the match strong, capturing wins in all three doubles matches.

The duo of Olivia Stannard and Ellie Linsell ran past their competition picking up an 8-0 victory at the number one spot, while Blakeley Bean and Gisela Fernandez were dominant as well, earning an 8-4 win at the number two doubles position.

To cap off the impressive doubles play, the team of Laura Janke and Jennifer Ansari downed Azeib Nigatu and Chloe McSwain, grabbing an 8-0 win.

ASU continued its stout play in singles action, as the Mountaineer's swept all six singles bouts.

Linsell defeated Jaymee Jones in two sets, winning 6-4, 6-2 at the number one spot, while Ansari handed Winnie Quick a 6-1, 6-2 loss at the number two position.

Appalachian continued to roll, as Caroline Mauch and Fernandez were victorious at the number three and four spots, and Bean defeated Cayla Cross 6-4, 7-6 at the number five position.

Keeping the Apps spotless on the day, Janke rounded out singles action with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Nigatu at number six singles.

The Mountaineer's now take a lengthy break, before returning to action Wednesday February 10, traveling to nearby Banner Elk, N.C. to face Lees McRae at 3 p.m.
